ZigZag Hat

Size

To fit: Average Adult

Hat body circumference: 48 cm (19in)

Brim circumference: 44cm (17 1/4in)

Length: 22cm (8 3/4in)

Required Supplies

Yarn: Yarn in any color of your choice

Knitting needles: 6mm and 6.5mm circular or double pointed needles match the size of the yarn label.

Knitting accessories: Tapestry needle, stitch markers, blocking essentials, and scissors.

Tension

After blocking, 15 stitches and 18 rounds to 10 cm over using 6.5mm needles. You can use larger or smaller needles to obtain the correct tension.

Abbreviations

T2L: Left twist: Insert the right-hand needle tip from back to front between the first and second stitches on the left-hand needle, knit the second stitches, knit the first stitch, and then slip both stitches off the needle.

T2R: Right twist: Knit the second stitch on the right-hand needle, knit the first stitch, and then slip both stitches off the needle.

Round 12: Purl 2, (T2R) 3 times, purl 1.

Round 13: Repeat round 7.

Round 14: Purl 1, (T2R) 3 times, purl 2.

Round 15: Repeat round 5.

Round 16: (T2R) 3 times, purl 3.

Hat

Cast on 72 stitches with 6mm needles. Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches, and place a stitch marker at the beginning of the round.

Rib round: Knit1, Tbl, purl 1 to end.

Repeat rib round 7 more times.

Set the main pattern

Switch to the 6.5mm knitting needle size.

Next round: Work round 1 of twist zigzag pattern to the end.

This round sets the position of the pattern. Continue in the pattern as set until you have worked 2 full reps of 16 round twist Zigzag pattern, then work round 1 once more.

Set crown decrease

Set-up round (dec): K2tog, knit 35, k2tog, knit to end (70 stitches).

Dec round 1: (K2tog, knit 5) to end (60 stitches).

Dec round 2: (K2tog, knit 4) to end (50 stitches).

Dec round 3: (K2tog, knit 3) to end (40 stitches).

Dec round 4: (K2tog, knit 2) to end (30 stitches).

Dec round 5: (K2tog, knit 1) to end (20 stitches).

Dec round 6: (K2tog) to end (10 stitches).

Break or cut the yarn, leaving a tail. Thread through the remaining stitches and pull tight to bind off.

Finishing

Weave in the ends and block gently to measurement, according to yarn band instructions.
