Baby Cardigan Pattern

Materials:

  1. Symfonie Yarns Ruby SS3010 (200 yards, 113 grams) - One ball
  2. Knitting Accessories: 4 Stitch markers and Stitch holder
  3. Waste yarn
  4. Four 5 3/4" buttons (Optional)
  5. Size 4 US and Size 6 US double pointed or circular knitting needles, whichever you want to use.

Abbreviations:

  1. K: Knit
  2. P: Purl
  3. PM: Place marker
  4. MM: Move marker
  5. 2YO: Double yarn over
  6. P2tog: Purl 2 together
  7. P3tog: Purl 3 together
  8. M1R: Make 1 right
  9. M2L: Make 1 left

Initial Measurements

Chest and hem: 21 inches or adjust as per required size
Sleeve length: 6 or adjust as per required size
Sleeve wrist circumference: 4 or adjust as per required size
Length: 8 or adjust as per required size

Gauge

18 stitches and 25 rows = 4 inches in Stockinette stitch

Start the Body

Use Size 4 US knitting needles and cast on 30 stitches or as per your size requirement.

Step 1: Work in a pattern of knit 1, purl 1 for 4 rows.

Step 2: Switch Needle Size and Set Up Rows

Switch to Size 6 US knitting needles.

Set up your work by knitting 1, then purling P4 sts, place marker (PM), P5 sts, PM, P10 sts, PM, P5 sts, PM, sts, K1

Step 3: Increase Rows

  1. On the right side, increase your stitches until 1 stitch before the marker, M1R, MM, M1L 4 times, then knit to the end.
  2. On the wrong side, K1, p until the last stitch, then knit 1.

Step 4: Continue Working

Keep repeating this until you have 134 stitches on your knitting needle.

Step 5: Separate Sleeves

  1. Switch to Size 4 US double pointed knitting needle for ribbing: K1, P1 to end for 6 rows. Cast off.
  2. K1 and p to marker, then remove marker, put 31 sts on a stitch holder, now cast on 2, MM, P back sts, remove marker, place 31 sts on stitch holder, cast on 2, MM, P to last st, K1.
  3. Continue working on the remaining stitches until the piece measures 7 inches from the cast-on edge.

Step 6: Add Ribbing and Finish the Body

Switch back to Size 4 US DPs and create a knit 1, purl 1 ribbing for 6 rows.

Cast off your stitches.

Knit the Arms (Make Two)

  1. Use double-pointed needles to pick up 31 sts and 4 from the body to knit the sleeves (total 35 sts).
  2. Starting from the midpoint of the underarm, perform a knit two together (k2tog), knit until the last two stitches, and then execute a slip, slip, knit (ssk).
  3. Proceed to knit 4 rows.
  4. Repeat the above instructions for an additional 5 decreased rows.
  5. Use size 4 US double-pointed needles (DPNs).
  6. Once you've completed a combined total of 32 (34, 36, 38) rows, transition to
  7. Engage in 6 rows, employing a knit one, purl 1 ribbing.

Add Button Band

  1. Use Size 4 DPNs to pick up 27 sts along the front opening.
  2. Create a knit 1, purl 1 ribbing for four rows.
  3. Follow specific instructions for rows 5-9, and cast off on row 10.

Finishing Touches

  1. Block your finished piece.
  2. Sew buttons onto the underside of the button band, aligning them with the yarnovers.
