I Love Yarn Day: Crochet and Knitting Projects to Celebrate Your Love of Yarn

Saturday, October 10 is I Love Yarn Day, the one day a year nobody questions the size of your stash. Created by the Craft Yarn Council and held on the second Saturday of October, it's a day built for casting on something new. The idea is simple: finish a project, start one, or hand your needles to someone who has never held them.

Whether you're working a lace shawl or a quick cowl, grab your needles and hooks and join in.

How to Celebrate I Love Yarn Day

A ball of yarn and an hour is enough to take part. Here are a few favorite Yarn Day Celebration Ideas:

  1. Join Community Events: Check your local yarn shop's calendar or search #ILoveYarnDay for in-person meetups and online craft-alongs.
  2. Make a Gift: Knit a hat or pair of mitts and donate it to a local shelter or community center.
  3. Pass It On: Show a friend the long tail cast-on or a chain and single crochet. Ten minutes is enough to get them started.

Free Stash-Busting Sock Pattern: Symfonie Desert Bloom

Skill level: Confident beginner (a great first heel).

Yarn: fingering weight, about 350 to 400 yd (320 to 365 m). One 100g skein or two partials will do.

Needles: 2.25 mm DPNs, set of five. Lantern Moon ebony DPNs keep stitches gliding.

Gauge: 32 sts and 44 rounds = 4 in (10 cm) in stockinette.

Fits: about 8 in (20 cm) foot circumference.

The pattern is plain stockinette on purpose. Let a hand-dyed, desert-toned colorway do the blooming.

  1. Cuff: Cast on 64 stitches, 16 per needle, and join in the round without twisting. Work 1×1 or 2×2 ribbing for 1 to 1.5 in.
  2. Leg: Knit every round until the leg measures about 6 in (15 cm).
  3. Heel Flap: Work the first 32 stitches back and forth. Leave the other 32 on hold for the instep.
    Row 1 (RS): sl1, k1, repeat across.
Row 2 (WS): sl1, purl across.
Repeat for 32 rows, which gives you 16 slipped edge stitches per side.
  4. Heel Turn: Work short rows, decreasing at each gap (ssk on the knit side, p2tog on the purl side), until all heel stitches have been worked.
  5. Gusset: Pick up 16 stitches along each side of the flap, plus one extra at each corner. Knit across the instep. Then decrease every other round: knit to the last 3 sts before the instep, k2tog, k1. After the instep, k1, ssk, knit to the end. Continue until 64 stitches remain.
  6. Foot: Knit even until the foot is 2 in (5 cm) shorter than your full foot length.
  7. Toe: Decrease every other round until 32 stitches remain, then every round until 16 remains (8 on top, 8 on the sole). Graft the toe closed with Kitchener stitch.

Quick Weekend Knitting Projects

  1. One-Skein Wonders: A squishy garter-stitch cowl takes under 100g of yarn and keeps you warm all autumn.
  2. Quick Knitting Gifts for Yarn Lovers: Fingerless mitts take one skein and a weekend, and they fit almost anyone.
  3. Easy Yarn Craft Ideas: A mug cozy uses about 20 g of yarn and a bookmark strip even less. Both are good ways to use up scraps.

Best Crochet Projects for I Love Yarn Day

Crochet suits Yarn Day well because most projects are small and fast. A potholder or headband takes an afternoon.

Beginner-Friendly Crochet Patterns for Yarn Day

  1. Stash-Busting Crochet Patterns: Granny square coasters use up scraps and take about 15 minutes each.
  2. Crochet Projects for Beginners: A basic double-crochet infinity scarf requires only one cake of yarn and zero complex shaping.
  3. Quick Crochet Projects: A single-crochet key fob takes about 30 minutes. A mini plant hanger takes an evening.

Essential Tools for Quick Yarn Projects from Lantern Moon

Having the right tools makes the project smoother, especially when working on quick knitting and crochet patterns:

  1. Lantern Moon double-pointed needles suit small rounds like socks and mitts. For hats and sleeves, Destiny circulars keep every stitch on one continuous cable.
  2. You can even use interchangeable needle sets, such as Heirloom or Glory, so one set covers a 16 in hat and a 40 in shawl.
  3. Radiance single-ended hooks suit the coasters and key fobs above. If you want to try Tunisian crochet, the Bequest hook is the one to reach for.
