Socktober starts this month, and a ball of yarn is all you need to join in. With the air turning cool and crisp, it's the right time to knit a pair of textured socks. Socks are also the fastest finished object in knitting, which makes them a good fit for the October sock knitting challenge. Here are three easy Sock Patterns to start with. Grab your yarn and your Lantern Moon needles, and cast on!
Pattern 1: Scrappy DK Socks (By Stephen West)
Got leftover DK in your project bag? This quick, free knitting sock pattern is a good way to use it up for Socktober 2026.
Best for: Stash-busting
- Yarn: DK-weight
- Knitting needle sizes: US 4 / 3.5mm circular in 40″ / 100cm length or size needed to obtain gauge.
- Yardage: Approx. 230 [260, 290, 320, 350] yds / 210 [238, 265, 293, 320] m total, in sizes [S, M, L, XL, XXL]
- Texture and Look: Cozy stockinette stitch along the leg and foot, with a simple ribbed top and a sturdy garter stitch heel.
How to Make It: Cast on at the top cuff, work your stretchy ribbing, and knit down the leg in stockinette stitch while swapping your favorite colors. Work the garter stitch heel flap back and forth over half your stitches, turn the heel with basic decreases, pick up stitches along the sides, and knit the foot. Finish by shaping the toe, closing it up, and weaving in your ends.

Challenges |
Solution |
|
Running out of yarn mid-sock. Leftovers vary in yardage. |
Check the weight of the scrap first. Then, knit the heel and toe in the color you have the most of, and split the leg stripes evenly between both socks. |
|
Messy ends and holes at color changes. |
Weave ends in as you go, or use the Russian join so there are no ends to weave. |
|
Mismatched socks. Random color changes make the pair look uneven. |
Use a fixed stripe sequence, or start the second sock with the colors in reverse order for an intentional “fraternal” look. |
Pattern 2: Pebble Path Knitted Sock
If you like textured, Symfonie's free Pebble Path Sock Pattern is a wonderful choice. ("Ribbed" is only the cuff.)
Best for: Relaxed evening knitting
- Yarn: Fingering-Weight Sock yarn like Symfonie TERRA (75% wool, 25% polyamide; 1 skein, about 100g).
- Knitting Needle Sizes: 2.25mm / US 1 DPN or circular for the cuff; 2.5mm / US 1.5 DPN or circular for the leg and foot.
- Gauge: 30 stitches and 42 rounds = 10cm / 4″ in stockinette stitch on 2.5mm needles.
- Texture and Look: A neat knit-and-purl pattern that makes tiny, pebble-like bumps across the leg and top of the foot.
How to Make It: Cast on at the cuff, work 14 simple rounds of 1x1 ribbing, and switch to your slightly larger needles from Lantern Moon. Follow the knit-purl texture down the leg. Next, knit a basic smooth heel flap and turn the heel. Pick up your side stitches to form the gusset, keep the textured pattern on top of the foot while keeping the sole smooth, and end with a standard smooth toe decrease.

Challenges |
Solutions |
|
Losing your place in the knit-purl repeat. |
Use stitch markers between repeats and a row counter or sticky note. |
|
Pooling or hiding texture in variegated yarn. |
Use a tonal or semi-solid yarn so the pebbles show up. |
|
Tight gauge on textured stitches. |
Go up a needle size, or relax your tension when switching from knit to purl. |
Pattern 3: Nordic Nights Sock
Best for: First-time colorwork
Thinking of trying autumn sock knitting? Nordic Nights free pattern gives you a two-color Fair Isle! Follow the chart for the knit-purl texture down the leg.
- Yarn: Symfonie's TERRA (75% Wool, 25% Polyamide; approx: 400m (438 yd) / 100g (3.5oz).
- Knitting Needle Sizes: 2.25mm / US 1 DPN or circular for the cuff; 2.5mm / US 1.5 DPN or circular for the colorwork. Lantern Moon interchangeable needles make swapping sizes quick and hassle-free.
- Gauge: 30 stitches and 42 rounds = 10cm / 4″ in stockinette stitch on 2.5mm needles.
- Texture and Look: Warm, classic Fair Isle colorwork knitted in smooth stockinette stitches.
How to Make It: Start at the top cuff with your ribbing color, then use your two main contrast colors to work the repeated color chart down the leg. Work the heel in a solid accent color, pick up stitches along the sides, and carry the color pattern across the top of the foot. Switch back to the accent color for the toe, decrease until small, and weave in your ends!

Solutions |
|
Uneven tension between colors. |
Hold the dominant color in the same hand throughout, or use two hands for even control. |
|
Tangled yarns. |
Keep each yarn on opposite sides of the project bag, or use a yarn bowl or divider. |
|
Color bleeding. |
Wash a swatch first and use colorfast yarn. |
