May is an exciting month for moon lovers, nature enthusiasts, and crafters alike. And this May is particularly special. For the first time since August 2023, we have two full moons in a single month. The first rises on May 1, and the second, a rare Blue Moon, closes out the month on May 31. For those of us who find creative energy in the rhythms of the natural world, this is a month worth celebrating with yarn in hand.
The Flower Moon
May's full moons carry the beautiful name "Flower Moon," a title credited to the Algonquin tribe in Native lore. And the name is perfectly accurate. May is the peak blooming season across much of North America, with wildflowers abundant, new life everywhere, and a sense of renewal in the air. It is no coincidence that we see so many babies of all kinds born in May.
A fun piece of trivia: the month of May itself was first named for Maia, the Roman goddess of spring and growth. Fertility, abundance, and fresh beginnings are woven into the very fabric of this month, and for makers, that creative energy is genuinely infectious.
There is nothing quite like watching a full moon lift above the horizon while planning your next project.

What is a Blue Moon?
Have you ever heard the expression, “Once in a Blue Moon”? It is an old adage that signifies something is uncommon. May’s second moon (May 31) is named as such since, as the second full moon in a month, it’s a rare occurrence. While it is not “blue” in appearance, it appears smaller than the earlier one because of its distance from Earth.
To celebrate this rare occurrence, here’s a free pattern for the Blue Moon Crescent Shawl. It uses a lightweight yarn like Diva, a new laceweight merino/silk yarn from Symfonie.

If it’s flowers you fancy, here are a few to crochet. This is a clever way to use up those extra bits of yarn we all seem to hold onto. Use them as decoration on your favorite sweater or tote bag. They are also a sweet way to decorate a Mother’s Day card!

Note: Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 10, 2026

Here are a few other celestial events in May:
May 5–6: Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower Peak: This shower can produce up to 30–60 meteors per hour, particularly in the Southern Hemisphere, though a waning gibbous moon may impact visibility.
May 18–20: Moon, Venus, and Jupiter Conjunctions: The crescent moon passes near bright Venus on May 18-19 and Jupiter on May 20, creating a notable trio in the western evening sky.
May 31: Full Blue Moon: The second full moon occurs in May, known as a Blue Moon.
Be sure to come back next month when we will be celebrating June’s Strawberry Moon, named in honor of the Strawberry Harvest. This year will be especially interesting since it’s a “micro-moon”. We will be writing all about it, so be sure to check us out.
