The August Moon

The August Moon

As Summer begins its slow fade into fall – at least in the Northern Hemisphere- the full moon on August 9th, highlights the richness of this season by being a Supermoon. This makes it appear larger than it is and brighter, as well. It’s an illusion, but it seems fitting as Summer slows down.

The August moon was named the Sturgeon Moon by the Algonquin Indians in recognition of the ancient fish species that were easily caught in late Summer. The Sturgeon is also symbolic of persistence and wisdom since it has survived for multiple millennia thanks to its adaptive ways.

The August Moon and Crafting

Since the August Moon arrives just before Autumn, it calls us to adapt to the season by finishing up projects or tasks and getting ready for a slower time of year.

That last bit strikes us as a good way for all knit and crochet fans to take stock of their baskets of unfinished items or left over yarns. To brighten the tedium of finishing old projects, why not try some new needles or crochet hooks? Lantern Moon collection of knitting needles and crochet hooks are almost guaranteed to turn finishing into an enjoyable chore.

All Lantern Moon knitting needles and crochet hooks are handcrafted, using Ebony wood, one of the world’s most luxurious materials. It’s also a “warm wood” which means they are easy in (and on) your hand.

Lantern Moon Crochet Hooks

If you have some left over yarn in your stash, you might consider making a variety of gorgeous Granny Squares. There are oodles of free instructions or look here and find out how to get started. The cool thing about these squares is they can be made in a variety of sizes and items.  It’s all about the size of the hook and the weight of the yarn. Worsted weight yarns, such as Bella, make beauties, but Viva, with a smaller hook, also results in great grannies.

Here are a few ideas for using up all that yummy left-over yarn just sitting idly in your stash. Be sure to use the right sized crochet hook to make cute items like these.

It's always good to have a selection of sizes on hand, whether for crochet hooks or knitting needles. That’s why the variety of sets that are available from Lantern Moon are popular. This crochet set, neatly packaged in a silk case, is a good example. It offers 6 of the most popular sizes, organized, and neatly enveloped in a custom-made silk case.
